How Firmoscan computes what it shows

Every number on a company page comes from a Companies House record and a rule listed here. Nothing is estimated or modelled. Register snapshot 2026-08-31.

Sources

Company profiles from the Companies House monthly bulk file and REST profile endpoint; accounts figures from the iXBRL accounts data product (every period filed since 2015 that was submitted as iXBRL, including the comparative period in each filing); persons with significant control from the PSC bulk snapshot; officers, filing history and charges from the REST API; changes from the streaming API. All under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Paper and PDF-only accounts (mostly pre-2011) are not parsed, so a company can have fewer periods here than at Companies House.

The score (0–100) and grade

Every company with at least one accounts period, or older than two years, or not Active, gets a score. It starts at 50 and each rule below adds or subtracts points; the result is clamped to 0–100. Grades: A ≥ 80, B ≥ 65, C ≥ 50, D ≥ 35, E below. The reasons shown on the page are the exact rules that fired, with the evidence. The score is a summary of filed facts, not a credit rating, a prediction, or advice; a company with no accounts yet and under two years old is not scored at all.

Trends

Over the last three periods on record: rising if every step is up, falling if every step is down, flat if every step moves less than 3% of the largest value, otherwise volatile. Fewer than three periods: no trend.

Ratios

Current ratio = current assets ÷ creditors due within one year (when current assets are not filed, cash plus debtors is used). Debt ratio = (creditors within one year + after one year) ÷ total assets. Net margin = profit for the year ÷ turnover. Cash per employee = cash ÷ average employees. A ratio is blank when any input was not filed.

Size band

Companies Act thresholds as raised in April 2025, two of three tests: micro (turnover ≤ £1m, balance sheet ≤ £500k, ≤ 10 employees), small (≤ £15m, ≤ £7.5m, ≤ 50), medium (≤ £54m, ≤ £27m, ≤ 250), otherwise large. Net assets stand in for balance-sheet total where total assets are not filed.

Peer quartiles

Peers are companies with the same primary SIC code in the same region (regions are groups of postcode areas; "UK" is the national group). For each group with at least 20 companies we compute the 25th, 50th and 75th percentile of latest net assets, plus median cash, turnover, employees and age. The local group is used when it has at least 50 companies, otherwise the national one. The sentence on the page says which.

Due dates

Where the REST profile has been loaded, the next accounts and confirmation-statement due dates are the register's own. Otherwise: first accounts 21 months after incorporation; subsequent accounts 9 months after the period end; confirmation statement 14 days after the anniversary of the last one. These are marked "expected".

What is never published

Officers' dates of birth (the register only gives month and year; we store it for disambiguation and do not display it) and residential addresses. Corrections and removal requests: hello@firmoscan.com, handled within one working day.
